I – and my dry skin – have a long and tempestuous history with cleansing oils and cleansing butters. It’s a constant balancing act between ‘this product removes all my makeup and sunscreen like a dream’ and ‘this product leaves my skin parched like a desert.’ We all know nothing removes oil better than oil, right? Well, if you don’t have a lot of oil to begin with, the merest hint of an oil cleanse can leave your skin gasping for a drink. Removing all my makeup in one hit is nice, but not at the expense of my face feeling dry, tight and uncomfortable.
Which brings me to The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter. This butter-to-oil cleanser has a super low melting point, can be safely used around the eyes and lips, and emulsifies without leaving a sticky film on my skin.
I wear makeup a couple of times a week and tend to do a full face out of habit – sunscreen, primer, foundation, matte powder, plus low key eye and cheek colour – and wanted something that would remove everything in one application, without destroying my semi-sensitive dry skin.
A small fingerful of cleansing butter warmed between my palms is enough to do my full face and neckline, and sluices through every single thing I’ve layered on my face, including a healthy layer of Sydney pollution, without over-drying or stripping my skin. The only thing it struggles to remove is my mascara, which to be totally fair is basically unremovable by anything known to man. Waterproof eyeliner, however, is no match for it.
Pairing it up with a muslin cloth – which The Body Shop also sells – makes it an effective one step cleanser. The camomile butter cleanses, while the muslin cloth exfoliates and lifts away any goop. A regular face cloth works just as well, of course. Sometimes I do a quick double cleanse, but most of the time I’m good to go with a single application.
The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter has a mild floral scent, but I find it quite inoffensive and it doesn’t linger on my skin.
Short version: I love this cleanser. It removes everything I want it to remove, it doesn’t leave my skin dry and unhappy, and at AUD$24.95 for a tin in which I use a weeny fingertip of product at a time, it’s great value. A true five star product.
