I’ve been riding the Benefit They’re Real! mascara bandwagon ever since it launched. It’s my default mascara because it doesn’t clump, flake, smear on my glasses, or act as anything but the perfect mascara for me. It’s also the only mascara that I’ll happily wear on my bottom lashes without even the slightest worry about it drifting or smudging. A+!
I picked up a tube of They’re Real! in the new(ish) Beyond Blue colour a month ago and immediately put it aside because, honestly, when was the last time I felt a pressing need to reach for blue mascara? Maybe if I was dressing up as Lady Di.
But, hey! The sun has been shining, the weather is warmer, and if there’s ever a time to take a risk on wearing blue mascara, it’s on a nice Spring day.
Beyond Blue looks electric royal blue when wet in the tube, but on my lashes it dries to a pretty navy blue, fading slightly brighter at the tips. I’ve also applied it as a tip colour over regular black mascara to add an imperceptible wash of colour to boost the illusion of black mascara/liner looking even darker, make the white of my eyes look brighter, and play up the grey colour of my eyes.
The spiky silicone brush is great for doing a vertical sweep of my lashes from root to tip to create smooth, elongated length with a semi-realistic spiked, feathery finish. The rounded ball tip is good for doing my bottom lashes – I like to hold the brush vertically and sweep my lashline from side to side, an easy way to ensure no accidental clumps or smudges – but I find that it gets a little too chunky and flooded with product to catch the little corner lashes on my upper lashline.
My eyelashes are fairly unimpressive at the best of times, so I tend to take any promises of mega volume and curl with a very large grain of salt. They’re Real! gives my lashes colour and definition in a formula that doesn’t flake or smudge, which is all I’m really looking for in a mascara anyway. I can – and have – layered They’re Real! to build up bigger and fatter lashes, but it’s honestly more work than I’m strictly willing to invest on a day to day basis, you know? Curling my lashes with a Shu Uemura lash curler then apply a quick sweep of They’re Real! to lock in the curl is effective enough most of the time.
I’ve read a few reviews around the place that comment on this mascara being tough to remove and that they struggle with not tearing eyelashes out while removing it. If you’re trying to use a traditional or bi-step eye makeup remover, you will seriously struggle with removing They’re Real!. Use an oil-based eye makeup remover or oil-based facial precleanser will turn this mascara into Meltsville, no tugging or tearing required. If you’re in a pinch or want a more natural solution, a dab of light oil (macadamia, coconut, you name it) will power through even the toughest waterproof or long-wearing makeup, while giving your lashes a bit of healthy conditioning as a bonus!
