Petrol Blue Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner is a deep navy blue shimmer eyeliner pencil. The formula is quite soft, almost like a greasepaint pencil, and has a reasonably deep and rich colour payoff.
It applies very smoothly applied straight to the lid, but I really like applying it with a pencil brush, either building up the liner shape from scratch or smoothing out a pencil application. A lot of pearl/frost/sparkle liners lose their shine when you start fussing around with brush applications, but Petrol Blue maintains its lustre regardless of how you pop it on.
I don’t have anything greatly similar to Petrol Blue in my collection – I don’t have much in the way of blue eyeliners at all, apart from MAC Signature Blue Superslick Liquid Liner (which I suspect has been discontinued) and Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes 15L which is significantly lighter and brighter.
After some experimentation I’ve found that the best way to apply this eyeliner is to apply it in several light layers, waiting for thirty or so seconds between applications to allow it to set. It builds up the intensity and maintains Petrol Blue’s pearly lustre while giving a stronger ‘set’ to the liner and reducing smudges and product movement.
As with most eyeliner pencils it works best when it can grip onto a powder base. Prime your eyes with your non-greasy eye primer of choice, top with powder eyeshadow, then finish with eyeliner. It’ll maintain its colour and shape a great deal longer than if you slop it onto a bare lid, and greatly reduce the chance of it slowly sliding down towards your neckline after a few hours.
Caligrafy Modern Twist Lash Mascara is a deep navy mascara with a touch of blue sparkle. The mascara itself is quite a lightweight formula with lengthening and separating properties and a curvy wiggle brush. My lashes are fairly uninspired – not too thick, not too long, just comfortably average – and the Modern Twist mascara gave a nice bit of lift and separation with an appealing but of flutter
I’ll admit that I’m kind of dour and old fashioned when it comes to mascara: unless the mascara itself is a super bright obvious colour – neon blue, chartreuse green, electric purple – I honestly just can’t see it. Is it black? It looks black to me. Call me in twenty years when I’ve got 16K HD robot eyes and finally might be able to recognise the difference between a navy blue mascara and an eggplant mascara.
