This is long overdue, but I felt like it was time to give a nod to my official Summer Colour of 2K15: Chanel Flirt Coco Shine Lipstick, a sheer glazed confection in delicate coral.
I talk a lot about ‘my lips but better’ lip colours: colours that enhance your natural lip colour, that hug your lips and look natural and effortless without necessarily being an exact match to your natural lip colour.
Flirt is exactly that kind of lip colour. It’s coral in the tube and coral on my lips, yes, but it’s the kind of diaphanous cellophane colour that looks like it was made for me and my complexion. It’s a seriously, seriously lovely lip colour.
I’ve always been a loud and proud booster for gel lipsticks. It’s easily my favourite lipstick formula, combining an ultralight lip feel with wearable shine. It’s a formula that encourages simplicity, eschewing the need for careful application of lipliner and fussing around with lipbrushes. Just slick, slide and go, easy peasy.
Chanel Coco Shine lipsticks are one of the nicest gels I’ve worn recently, with probably the lightest lip weight I’ve tried. The closest lip feel I can think of is, semi-surprisingly, two wildly disparate styles of lip balm: it has the slip of Dr Bronner lip balm, and the buttery feel of Korres Lip Butters. Most gel lipsticks are ever so slightly ‘stiff’ in the tube and subsequently the lip on application, mostly to avoid issues with low melting points, but Coco Shine is smooth, smooth, smooth.
The tradeoff for the airy light feel of a gel lipstick is, of course, that you sacrifice quite a great deal of wear time. Flirt Coco Shine has a wear time on bare lips of around two or three hours, similar to a lip balm. Flirt is light enough in colour that it wears away without leaving a stain or a ring around my lips, so I’m happy to reapply it more or less exactly like a lip balm. You can extend the weartime by applying it over a coloured lipliner and lining the outside of your lips with a clear lipliner, but honestly, I can’t be bothered. Pop it on, reapply as needed, call it a day. That’s more my style.
Chanel Flirt Coco Shine lipstick is a gorgeous colour in a formula that I’ve come to seriously, seriously like. At AUD$52 it’s some serious pocket change, but I’ve got so much wear out of it this Spring/Summer that my cost-per-use has become somewhat justifiable. Expensive, yes, but it’s just so pretty!
