Hold up, friends. Are you on the search for a yellow-based caramel lipstick? For whatever reason yellow based caramel lipsticks aren’t hugely common in Australia which, given our large West and East Asian population, is quite an interesting missing piece in our makeup palettes. Warm nudes are around, true, but a strong yellow-based nude lipstick is like finding a unicorn.
NARS Liguria lipstick is a very warm yellow-based butterscotch lipstick with fine golden fleck. It’s unlike most of the nude colours I reach for on a regular base, given that my personal collection leans more neutral to cool and my working kit is heavy on the custom blends, so I’ve chosen to compare it to some of my most commonly used beige and brown lip colours.
From left to right:
Liguria is slightly – slightly – sheer. It’s not a featherlight cellophane glaze, but has a lot of pigment that layers over my natural lip colour without fully covering it. The wear time of Liguria is around four hours on my bare lips, with noticeable wear after two or so hours. After four hours it wore away to leave a ring around my lipline, although it didn’t slide or move over the boundary of my lipline.
Where Liguria really shines is as part of a fully styled nude lip. I’ve lined my lips with Too Faced Spice lipliner and Urban Decay Ozone clear lipliner, taking Ozone around the lipline and gently blending Spice into it to keep a very soft blurred edge on my lip. I then applied Ligura across the lip, and topped with NARS Guyane lip gloss on the middle of my lip to create a dimensional, shapely lip that doesn’t look flat or concealer-like.
I was slightly wary of Liguria given that it’s so yellow based and my skin is quite fair and very cool-toned, and that can be an absolutely horrible combination (I’m still getting over the horror that was Viva Glam Gaga II), but it’s infinitely more wearable than I was expecting it to be. If you’re blessed with a deeper skintone and want a nude lipstick that’s not flat or ashy, this is exactly the kind of colour you should take a peek at.
