Essence Bloom Me Up! Shimmer Powder

Essence is one of those brands I know absolutely nothing about. I see their stands in Priceline all the time but skip straight past; Priceline sometimes isn’t the best at keeping stands well stocked, clean and inviting, y’know? I was killing some time with Angie recently and she raved about an Essence mascara and the stand was stocked for once, so I grabbed a few random bits and pieces to try out at my leisure.

One of the products I nabbed was this Essence Bloom Me Up! Shimmer Powder, a pearlescent powder in an icy pinky-beige tone. I wasn’t expecting this to be quite as reflective or quite as intense as it is; it consistently develops a high shine silver reflect even when tapped off and applied with a loose fluffy brush. After some trial and error I found that the best way to apply it was in a sandwich: I set my tinted moisturiser with a translucent setting powder like Make Up For Ever HD Setting Powder, lightly dust Bloom Me Up! Shimmer Powder along my cheekbones and browbone, then finish with a sweep of a tinted finishing powder like MAC Blot. It mutes the shine down to a muted pearl effect, making it much more wearable.

I wasn’t expecting to be particularly wowed by something that cost less than a Starbucks coffee, but I’ve had a reasonable amount of wear out of this highlighting powder over the past few weeks. It’s probably not going to be my must-have go-to highlighter – the amount of finessing it requires to not look so shiny makes it lag behind something more out of the box wearable like NARS Albatross or an Hourglass highlighting powder – but for the moment I’m enjoying it as a light finishing touch on a Spring face. Just, y’know, have a featherlight hand with it.

I’m afraid it might be! It’s a no name liner I bought from one of the Korean makeup stores in Brisbane. I wish I’d purchased more of them; it’s the smoothest, most long lasting eyeliner I’ve ever used.

Damn :( It reminds me of Urban Decay’s Honey, back when it still existed… (Hint hint UD, bring back this shade in every formula. EVERY. FORMULA.) Probably time to hit up Koreatown. Thank you!
