ＷＩＮＴＥＲ ＡＥＳＴＨＥＴＩＣＳ 2K14 continues. I recently changed my hair back to a pale buttery blonde and I feel like I’ve had to shake up my entire makeup routine to compensate for the killer combo of pale hair/pale skin/pale eyes/pale lips. Colour, baby. I need colour, and what better than a decadent rich plum?
I’m a little late to the party when it comes to Lorde X MAC Pure Heroine lipstick – at this point its been out for a couple of months – but hey, no biggie. This deep plum is a transeasonal colour that never goes out of style; much like how a good ruby red lip is never out of fashion, a classic plum can shift from ironic 90s to aggressively post-futuristic in a snap.
Pure Heroine is a rich smoky plum creme with a tiny touch of black pigment lurking deep in the background, enough to cut through the plummy richness without muting the colour entirely. It compliments my fair cool-toned skin nicely, not too bold and not too bright, but more of a quietly confident colour. I’ve applied it with a lip brush over bare lips and achieved a lush depth of colour, infinitely smoother than what I could achieve by applying it straight from the tube. It has a lighter and smoother mouthfeel, with a slight lustrous skin. Pure Heroine is an Amplified formula lipstick, but doesn’t suffer from the thick, slightly dry finish that I’ve associated with Amplified lipsticks in the past.
For real world wear I’d recommend prepping your lips first by applying a translucent lip priming pencil around your lipline (Too Faced Borderline is an old kit staple of mine) and filling the entire lip with a long wearing waterproof lipliner like Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip in 12C Dark Matte Plum.
I’m quite enamoured by Pure Heroine, especially considering that it was the most impulsive of impulse purchases. I have nothing like it in my personal makeup collection nor my working makeup kit, so it definitely fills in a noticeable gap in my collection. It’s restrained and elegant, smoky and rich, and I’m definitely enjoying wearing this deep plum lip as part of my winter 2K14 aesthetic.
