I feel like I’ve written reams and reams about Clinique Chubby Sticks before – they were the first lip crayons I tried and the source of my ongoing love affair with all things lip crayon, so forgive me if this wee little chat about Clinique Voluptuous Violet Chubby Stick covers a lot of existing territory.
Clinique Chubby Sticks are wind-up lip crayons with a slightly dry balm-like finish, with medium pigmentation that leaves a cellophane finish on my lips. They’re not overly glossy, leaving a satiny shine that catches the light without being a high shine mirror finish.
I’m a big fan of lip crayons because they’re amazingly convenient for someone like me who doesn’t particularly care for wearing regular lipstick or lipgloss, but who wants a touch more colour than I’d get from a regular balm. They don’t require prepping with a lip brush or setting with lip liner, and the colour tends to last on my lips longer than a shiny gloss would. Add in the fact that they can live in the bottom of my bag without melting or going funky, and I’ve got a low effort makeup winner.
Voluptuous Violet is a pretty grape purple in the tube, mercifully free of sparkles and glitter. On my lips it transforms into a soft cellophane wash of violet pink, with a punchy pop of colour that stands out against my fair cool-toned skin. I was almost expecting this to be a twin to Black Honey Almost Lipstick that transforms from a midnight purple to a soft pinky neutral, but Voluptuous Violet is much brighter and sassier.
For some reason I am super, super into purple and plum lip colours this season, which is a total departure from my usual wardrobe of sheer neutral beiges and creams. As much as I’ve been enjoying wearing MAC Pure Heroine lipstick, I’m still infinitely more comfortable wearing a sheer tinted lip colour that requires less effort, less upkeep and less fear of smudging.
