Jessica A Night At The Opera collection

High theatrical glam is the order of the day, my friends. Jessica A Night At The Opera is a tightly edited nail collection of shimmers and midnight cremes, full of rich jewel tones and bold dramatic hues, perfect for cool Sydney winter afternoons. - Jessica Standing Ovation nail polish

Jessica Standing Ovation nail polish

Standing Ovation nail polish is a jewelled emerald frost with a subtle blue and violet duochrome effect. Although it looks quite intense in the bottle, the duochrome effect of Standing Ovation is very muted out of the bottle, catching slightly blue on the curve of my nail without any violet points. To be totally honest I’m not wild about duochrome polishes unless they’re very, very subtle, so Standing Ovation settling into a lustrous green is a-ok by me. Which, of course, brings me to the highlight of Standing Ovation: it’s pretty. It’s really pretty.

The soft gradient from  blue to metallic green reminds me of beetle shells in summertime, shining like little jewels in the hot still garden. It’s not a bright emerald nor is it a muted deep forest green, but it has a certain indescribable something that makes Standing Ovation absolutely compelling on my nails.

Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth

Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth

When I tried it on my nails I immediately thought of the incredible beetle wing dress worn by Dame Ellen Terry, an incredible confection of crocheted emerald green wool and gems, studded with hundreds of glistening beetle wings. If I had the steady hands and nerves of steel needed to create nail art, I’d do a homage to that dress by painting my nails with an even base coat of Jessica Blue Aria (see below) then sponging a fade gradient of Jessica Standing Ovation back from my nail tip, before finishing with a fish scale pattern stamp of Blue Aria over the top.

Standing Ovation is slightly thin when applied, so I used two medium coats to achieve full coverage. It can streak a little if you don’t work quickly or apply too much polish in one application, so apply it in moderation with fast, confident strokes to achieve a smooth glossy finish. Standing Ovation is greener than Chanel Peridot, and much finer than Zoya Ivanka or Pretty Serious VT100.

Jessica Prima Donna nail polish

Jessica Prima Donna nail polish

Prima Donna nail polish is a bold, ballsy violet purple frost. The formula on this was outstanding, with just one coat needed for full coverage with no streaks, brush strokes or bald spots. I typically have poor luck when it comes to wearing purple nail polish, with all shades of violet and orchid merging into a muddy mess against my cool toned skin, but Prima Donna has enough depth and intensity to *pop* against my pale complexion.

Prima Donna is brighter than Butter LONDON HRH and Zoya Danii, and more vibrant than China Glaze Coconut Kiss.

Jessica Blue Aria nail polish

Jessica Blue Aria nail polish

Blue Aria nail polish was easily my favourite lacquer of the three that I tried. It’s a plush, lush, decadent midnight blue creme that was fully opaque in a single stroke, with no pooling or streaking in sight. The formula is top notch, not too thick and not too thin, with a smooth glossy finish.

I can see myself getting a lot of wear out of this polish. Dark cremes are my nail polish weakness, second only to all shades of grey, and a lacquer with this great a formula is a delight to wear. I’d like to pair this polish up with a rose gold lacquer and create a Ruffian manicure, or a picture frame manicure similar to the nail art at Katie Gallagher A/W12.

Blue Aria nail polish is similar to The New Black Metropolis and OPI Road House Blues, and is darker than OPI Eurso Euro.

I finished my Jessica manicures with a slick of Jessica Brilliance top coat. It added high shine to my mani and minimised tip wear, all without adding thickness to my nails. It’s a little pricy at AUD$21.95, but it’s more convenient to rebuy than the increasingly scarce ol’ reliable INM Out The Door top coat.
