This sounds like I’m damning this perfume with faint praise, but trust me when I say that I’m totally on the level with this: David Beckham Classic EDT is infinitely more impressive than I expected. Masculine celebrity fragrances tend to be strong performers when it comes to wearability and style, but I’ve always bypassed the celebrity name section when I’m adding to The Chap’s fragrance library (which, more often than not, is also my library – such is the magic of being a fan of men’s perfumes!). My mental block is set firmly in place: the juice of celebrity perfumes are always too expensive, too safe, and too mainstream.
And then a bottle of David Beckham Classic EDT landed on my desk, and I’m blown away by it.
Classic is an unashamedly old school masculine fragrance in a sea of sporty perfumes; a season of Mad Men amongst a sea of Jersey Shore wannabes. It combines resinous galbanum and gin opening notes with a bassy cedar and cypress base with a touch of vetiver for freshness. It’s like fresh cut greens in a dark wood panelled room, warm and rich with a little touch of crispness.
The fragrances I buy for The Chap tend to be confident bright juices like Dior Homme Sport (2008 version), Chanel Bleu de Chanel and Chanel Egoiste Platinum, so Classic fits a previously empty niche in his collection. David Beckham isn’t a sporty, sexy scent, but that’s not really the point: it’s a classic fragrance, more at home in a board meeting than a nightclub.
That nicely leads me into my next point: David Beckham Classic smells a lot more expensive than it is. While it lacks the bassy roundness of a big plump masculine parfum, it still manages to smell confidently luxe and stately; certainly more luxe than it’s staggeringly affordable price point would otherwise indicate. When The Chap first unwrapped the bottle and sniffed the juice, he said that he thought it was a perfume in the $70-80 price bracket. I agreed with him, then I checked the RRP: AU$39. My stars and garters! At that price I might as well buy two.
Which, I think, is the strength of David Beckham Classic: it’s classic and confident, not just for the made man in the boardroom, but accessible to the fresh faced up-and-comer with ambitions to the boardroom.
