Sometimes it really helps to have low, low, low, low expectations for celebrity beauty lines. It means I’m not disappointed when celeb perfume #2837892 smells like candy and flowers, and it also means that I can be pleasantly surprised when something is a legitimately good product. Kardashian Beauty Sea Coral En-Joystick Lip Lacquer has an appallingly punny name, and the Kardashian marque isn’t exactly something I’d normally go out of my way to buy from, but I can ignore all of that, because this is a surprisingly good lipstick.
Sea Coral is a creamy apricot lipstick in a wind-up tube applicator, like a skinny version of a LipPerfection crayon or a Chubby Stick. The narrower application points suits the highly opaque lip cream; sheer gloss balms can afford to be a bit sloppy, but the fine tip means you can wield this lip lacquer and get a crisp clean line exactly where you want it to go.
Texture-wise this lip cream is pretty much note perfect. It’s a highly opaque cream which doesn’t require more than a single stroke to achieve full colour, even without a lipliner or neutral base on my rosy pink lips. It dries to a neutral velvety finish with no stickiness or tackiness, and it wears evenly without balling or pilling.
Sea Coral is one of those colours that I expected to have a thousand identical dupes, but it took a fair amount of scratching around to find colours that were similar. From left to right:
- Bobbi Brown Petal lip gloss
- L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse Glossy Stain in Romy
- Kardashian Beauty Sea Coral En-Joystick Lip Lacquer
- MAC Cosmetics Gotta Dash! Sheen Supreme lipstick
- Australis Hula Colour Inject lipstick
The closest colour to Sea Coral is MAC Cosmetics Gotta Dash!, which is both a) a much glossier finish and b) twice the price.
Short version: ignore the Kardashian name, because this is an outstandingly good opaque wind-up lipstick with a price that’ll get you change from a twenty, in a fresh apricot colour that’s perfect for Spring.
