The Beauty Encyclopedia: Unf*ck Your Habitat, Beauty Edition

Unf*ck Your Habitat is one of my favourite motivational sites and iPhone apps. The motto of UFYH is ‘terrifying motivation for lazy people with messy homes’, and the site works by breaking down the insurmountable job of cleaning an entire house into short, snack-sized mini jobs. It takes away the feeling of frustration of there being too much to do all at once, and makes it infinitely easier to get the job done.

But what does that have to do with this site, you ask? Well, think about your bathroom or your dresser that’s covered in ancient tubes of mascara, hairbrushes that are 90% hair by weight, dried out old cream eyeshadows and god knows what else, all covered a fine dusting of bronzed powder and Studio Fix.

Now think about cleaning it all in one hit. Think about sorting out old lipsticks from new ones. Think about digging through five identical liquid liners to find the one that hasn’t dried out. Imagine scrubbing all that caked-on face powder dusted over your sink. Nightmare, right?

Maybe you’re a neatnik already, maybe you’re not. There’s no judgement here, my friends. Regardless of your tidiness at this point in time, if you break down the maintenance of your beauty area and your beauty collection into a series of very quick daily, weekly, monthly, seasonally and annual jobs, then it won’t be a pain in the ass to do it in one big hit whenever Spring cleaning season rolls around. No more funky tasting ancient lipsticks, no more empty moisturiser pot graveyard. Get on it!

  • Put away your skincare, makeup and haircare products after using them.
  • Wipe up any spilt product before it sets.
  • If you finish something, either put it aside for recycling or throw it out immediately.

  • Spot clean your makeup brushes with spray cleanser.
  • Throw away any used foundation sponges.
  • Wipe clean any pumps or lids on products you’ve used this week. This will stop the jars and bottles from getting crusty and gross.
  • Wipe down your makeup/hair area, empty your bin, and generally get everything ready for the week ahead.

  • Deep clean your makeup brushes with baby shampoo and antibacterial Dettol.
  • De-fluff your hair brushes.
  • Wipe the surface of your cream eyeshadows and blushes with a clean tissue.

  • Throw away any mascaras that are getting dry, clumpy or smelly.
  • Gently pat at the surface of your powder blushes and eyeshadows with a piece of Scotch Tape to lift away any grease or water stains that may have accumulated. This also lifts away any dust or dirt and gives you fresh product to work with.
  • Throw away any products that have separated or discoloured, anything that smells different to when you bought it, and anything missing its labels.
  • Change your power toothbrush head.
  • Change your Clarisonic brush.
  • Recycle any used product packages to companies that support such programs (Lush, MAC, Origins in the US), and recycle everything else appropriately.
  • Bin any nail polishes that have dried out.

  • Throw out unused foundation and concealer.
  • Edit your skincare, makeup and haircare collection. Throw away anything you haven’t used in the past six months or longer. Throw away any products that have gone out of date, separated, smell different or are missing their labels.

Easy, right? The short version is this: everything has a place, there’s no room for sentimentality when it comes to old crusty makeup, and the more old dead nail polishes you throw out means the more space you get back for new nail polishes. Win, win, win!

This is just a basic checklist of things to do to keep your grooming products and beauty space in check, and is by no means comprehensive. If I’ve missed anything, please let me know in the comments below!
