The New Black is a relatively new(ish) brand, specialising in nail polish sets that take the guesswork out of doing simple on-trend nails for people who aren’t nail art queens. As someone who is both pretty dang shocking at doing nail art and owns just enough polishes to make mix’n’matching a daunting prospect, I’m digging the simple edited nail duo packs – the two complimentary mini polishes in each set makes creating a feature nail laughably easy. I recently picked up The New Black Metropolish nail polish duo from Kit Cosmetics and decided to give it a road test.
The Metropolis nail duo consists of a medium gold frost and a dark navy blue cream. A bit of cursory googling shows that officially it’s supposed to be a dark eggplant purple creme, but as far as my set is concerned it’s naught but navy. The dark shade was a dream to apply with one coat being more or less flawless, but the gold polish is very sheer. I wouldn’t recommend using it over the navy shade to create little dots or a French tip or a Ruffian mani, but it’s a trifling issue to do a third coat on a basic feature nail.
The bottles in the set are teeny-tiny at just 4mls each, but considering that these lacquers are basically little intros to the constantly changing world of nail trends, unless you’re totally married to the idea of always wearing gold or navy then realistically ~15 applications per bottle is more than enough.
The brushes are well made for such small bottles, with decently long bristles with enough flex to make application a breeze. I had no issues with flooded cuticles or brush strokes, a feat particularly remarkable seeing as Metropolis was the first nail colour I’ve applied in a month!
Overall I think The New Black Metropolis nail polish duo absolutely nails what it sets out to do: it takes the guesswork out of doing a simple DIY home mani that’s a little more detailed than the usual single shade of red or pink. While I absolutely admire nail art goddesses who create intricate works of art on their own nails, that’s not a skill that I have and it’s nice to have something for me that’s simple, accessible and not overly pricey.
