2013: The Year Of Big Glossy Lip Crayons? Covergirl have joined in the tinted gloss/balm crayon craze with their new(ish) range of LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balms, with a slightly edited range of ten colours available locally. The colour range covers sheer light pinks through to deep plums, all featuring sheer wearable colour with a soft shine and no stickiness.
I feel like I’ve been writing about gloss crayons a lot over the past year or so, with brands like Revlon, Clinique and Face of Australia all adding gloss crayons to their lineup or expanding an already existing line of big wind-up crayon tinted balms. I’m definitely not crying out market saturation or anything, because I think they’re an excellent addition to my makeup bag. They have enough colour to brighten up my complexion but not so much that I feel obligated to take a great deal of care applying it or fussing with lip liners, plus the soft shine suits my pared-back ultra minimalist foundation (I’m lazy, ok?) without looking too blinged out ultra glossy.
Something worth pointing out about Covergirl’s LipPerfection crayons is that as far as I can tell, they have no scent or flavour. I don’t mean that they don’t smell like candy or that they smell like wax, I mean they seriously don’t smell of anything. They’re also without any discernable taste. If you’re sensitive to fragrances/flavours or just don’t care to smell like a scratch-n-sniff 1989-era Pony toy, keep these gloss crayons in mind.
Scarlet Twist is a basic mid-toned sheer red without any glitters or sparkles. I was worried it would turn neon pink on my lips, but it held its tomato red colour very well. Colourwise it’s quite warm without any pink undertones, making it an ideal Spring lip colour for all complexion types.
Ballet Twist is a sheer and dainty princess pink with loads of pearly shimmer. I was half expecting it to be a soft peach colour after eyeballing it in the tube, but no: it’s a pale pink stealth frost. Ballet Twist reminds me a lot of MAC Bombshell lipstick which I used to wear to death in 2004, in those heady days when I had midnight black hair and was kawaii enough to wear pink frosts with dignity. Can I wear pink frosts now? No, but Ballet Twist would look adorable on someone young and cute enough to carry it off with aplomb!
So here’s the skinny: Covergirl LipPerfection Jumbo Gloss Balms are a great budget-friendly crayon gloss, ideal for folks who are sensitive to scents and flavours. Plus, as I’ve said over and over again, lip crayons are excellent for people who appreciate the fine art of lazy makeup. What’s not to like?
