Ah, we must be looking forward to spring already. A new season is on the horizon, which means a new wardrobe, a new hairstyle, and a new fragrance to help transition away from these chilly Sydney days! A few new perfumes are hitting the shelves this week, and one particularly Spring-influenced fragrance is the new L’Occitane Magnolia & Mûre EDT from the La Collection de Grasse fragrance collection.
This fresh floral opens with notes of bergamot and a very strong blackberry fruit before softening to a sweet magnolia floral and finishing with a warm, dry patchouli note. The fragrance overall tends more sweet than a true floral, but that dry patchouli base cuts through any syrupy or sugary notes.
I’m generally wary of berry fragrances because they can turn very artificial on my skin, but Magnolia & Mûre stays very true to a natural warm berry scent. After consulting with a few friends who are infinitely more into ultra feminine fragrances than I am, we’ve collectively decided that this fragrance is ideal for those of us approaching our 30s who first started buying our own fragrances during the sweet berry/floral craze of the early 2000s. Magnolia & Mûre is a nod to that same scent family, but in a much more refined, restrained, and adult way. It’s fruit and florals without the candy and sparkles.
The sillage of Magnolia & Mûre was light with the fragrance hugging close to my skin. As a rule I prefer my perfumes to be very intimate, especially so on the rare times I wear floral or fruit fragrances, so this suits me just fine. My nightmare is to be that woman who gets on a crowded elevator and fills the space with her lashings of Angel, y’know? The closer a fragrance stays to my skin and clothes, the happier I am.
L’Occitane Magnolia & Mûre EDT is a pleasant and wearable fruity floral that will really shine when the weather warms up. It brings back fond memories of our first forays into perfumes, but gives these memories a subtle and sophisticated modern twist. While I’m not hooked on feminine florals myself, Magnolia & Mûre has me interested enough in the La Collection de Grasse fragrances to investigate Thé Vert & Bigarade, the collection’s unisex fragrance.
