I’ve been a bit slack with getting the new L’Oreal Shine Caresse Glossy Stain lip glosses swatched and posted in a timely fashion. I know, I know. In my defence I’ve been out of commission after getting some somewhat hardcore eye surgery done, so peering down the lens of a camera has been low on my prority list. If these pictures aren’t up to my usual standard, I apologise; I’m still more or less relying on one eye and squinting at a computer screen is kinda difficult. But I digress! You don’t want to read about my woes, you want some lip gloss swatches!
Shine Caresse is a new gloss line from L’Oreal Paris that features a lightweight water-based formula gloss that, depending on the colour, also acts as a long-wearing lip stain. The formula on these glosses really is impressive, no foolin’. I’ve shied away from glosses over the past year or so because I’m starting to hate that gluey, sticky gloss feeling, even with glosses that promise to be low on the gloop factor. I’m a total convert back to glosses with this formula though, thanks to the fact that these glosses feel ultra light when applying. They apply cool, slick and thin, and only feel the tiniest bit sticky when they’re starting to dry down. Depending on the colour and finish, the glosses also have a stain quality to leave colour on your lips long after the gloss has gone.
Shine Caresse glosses come in 6ml tubes with a gold finish that, as so many people have pointed out, is a bit of a magnet for fingerprints and make-up bag fluff. Just a pro tip about the tubes – the little gold L’Oreal bar isn’t a catch to open the bottom of the tube and reveal the gloss wand. I was treating it like the release switch on a Gurlain lipstick until I noticed the person next to me unscrewing the bottom of the tube and happily checking out the gloss that way. So, uh, don’t be like me and overthink the packaging. It unscrews from the bottom and I’m an idiot (obviously).
The wand itself is reasonably short and has a hollow oval fuzzy brush. I’m not a huge fan of that brush shape – I’m fairly sure I’ve bitched about the same brush style on other gloss products here before – but for this formula the broad paddle applicator works wonderfully. A regular small does-foot applicator wouldn’t have the ability to move such a slick product around easily. What it lacks in precise application it more than makes up for in coverage, so swings and roundabouts really.
Now, onto the important stuff: the lip swatches. All of these swatches are two swipes onto bare lips, no lip balm or primer.
- Shine Caresse – Eve
Eve is a creamy blue-based vibrant purple-pink with no shimmer or frost. If you’ve been looking at wearing brighter shades but don’t want the bold commitment of a lipstick, take a peek at this shade. Eve is bright without being gaudy, and fresh without being too little girl-y.
Stain power: strong.
- Shine Caresse – Romy
Romy is a warm orange-based pink with a little dash of shimmer. The colour is on the good side of fleshy, and looks kiss-flushed and sweet. The shimmer is quite subtle and doesn’t leave me with blinged out disco lips, even after the gloss has faded.
Stain power: medium.
- Shine Caresse – Marylin
Marilyn is a rose pink with no shimmer or sparkle. It’s a fresh summery colour, although it works just as nicely against paler winter skin and dark clothes. Paired up with a flick of black liner and a classic black wardrobe? Nice.
Stain power: strong.
- Shine Caresse – Lolita
Unsurprisingly this soft, sheer peachy nude-but-not was my favourite gloss in this pink selection. The shimmer is quite sparse and serves to make the gloss look even shinier. I’m partial to this shade because it’s bang on perfect as a handbag colour – no matter the outfit, no matter what make-up I’m wearing (or not wearing), this shade slicks on nicely and doesn’t clash.
Stain power: light.
