NARS Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow EOTD, swatch & review

NARS Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow

NARS Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow

Let’s be honest, I’ve been in a pretty solid make-up rut for a while now. Day in and day out I wear the same handful of neutral eyeshadows, and finish with the exact same flick of eyeliner and mascara each and every day. Should I change my routine? Yeah, maybe. Not today though, not after I finally pulled the trigger and dropped some sweet cashola on a particular neutral eyeshadow duo I’ve been eyeballing for a year or so now – NARS Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow.

This eyeshadow duo is possibly one of the most unassuming of NARS eyeshadow offerings, but don’t let the lack of bright colour fool you – these suckers are buttery smooth, packed with colour and a dream to apply. My goal for this shadow purchase was to find something that had a decent amount of smooth shimmer without being glittery or blinged out, and in a shade that wouldn’t look too overdone or makeup-y.

Alhambra meets both of these conditions, with its soft neutral tones and just enough pearly shine to look bright and fresh. The combination of a soft rose beige and a subtle gold is (almost) perfect for a simple and subtle two-tone eye on my cool-toned pale skin, although I could see it looking a little ashy on darker skintones.

The pigmentation of Alhambra is really superb, with loads of colour in just one swipe when applied dry. Like most NARS eyeshadows this can also be applied wet, creating a really plush metallic effect. The texture of the shadow itself is buttery smooth and soft, but not so much that it gets crumbly on the fan or causes a lot of shimmery fallout.

I don’t know if this is worthy of an Eye Of The Day breakdown because this is bordering on embarrassingly basic territory, but lemme lay it out anyway:

  1. Firstly I primed my eye with Too Faced Shadow Insurance in the original clear formula.
  2. Then I applied the pinky shadow with a large fluffy brush, concentrating the colour and shimmer on the inside corner of my eye before sweeping the remainder up and over my crease and towards my brow.
  3. I then picked up the golden champagne shadow with a smaller blending brush and applied it to the outside corner of my lid, softly working it just above the crease and blending well. I then used a small stiff brush to apply a little of the same shadow along my bottom lashes.
  4. Finally I applied MAC Superslick liner in Defiantly Brown, and added a light coat of Benefit They’re Real! mascara (get it at Adore Beauty!).

Easy. Easy, easy, easy.

My verdict? Alhambra is just right for what I wanted it to be: a simple, subtle eyeshadow due with a little pearly shimmer to keep me looking fresh and bright-eyed. Although it’s a little pricey at AU$55, the quality is superb and worth the cashola.

This is such an unassuming looking palette, in the pan it really looks like nothing to write home about, but gosh, isn’t it pretty on your eye. I have a bit of a thing for rose-gold at the moment, and this looks like a really nice one.

I’ve been picking it up and putting it at Mecca for months now because I didn’t know if it was going to look nice and/or different to the scores of other neutral shadows I own, but I’m glad I finally made the jump. Such a staple item now!
