I know this is a little out of my normal purview of beauty and grooming, but to heck with it. Australia is melting under a baking heatwave at the moment, so if this isn’t cocktail weather then it’s never going to be cocktail weather. I posted this on Instagram a few days ago and some fine Twitter people wanted to know my recipe, so here you go: my simple Amaretto Sour recipe.
If you’ve never had an amaretto sour before, then boyhowdy, are you ever missing out. The sweet almond liqueur and playful cherry flavours match perfectly with fresh lemon juice, combining to make a drink that’s tangy and tart, and very very refreshing.
A quick note before I begin: this isn’t a traditional amaretto sour recipe in a strict sense of the word. I’ve nixed a couple of traditional ingredients like whipped egg whites, and worked some of the garnishes like maraschino cherries into the mix itself. It might not be traditional as before, but it makes it a really fast drink to make that scales infinitely depending on how many glasses you want to make.
Swatchgirl’s Simple Amaretto Sour recipe
- One and a half measures of Disaronno almond liqueur
- 1/2 measure of maraschino liqueur
- One measure of fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 measure of simple syrup (if you don’t have simple syrup at hand then two teaspoons of white caster sugar will easily dissolve in the lemon juice)
Combine everything in a shaker over ice. If you’re using caster sugar instead of simple syrup, simply mix the sugar and lemon juice together in the shaker before adding ice. Shake until icy cold and serve in a chilled old fashioned glass over ice. Garnish with a wafer thin slice of lemon.
I’ve turned these into refreshing party drinks by building the amaretto sour as before, but serving over ice in mini Mason jars and topping with soda water. Finish with a paper straw garnish and you’ve made the sweetest afternoon aperitief!
