Bridesmaid’s curls & unpinned tresses: FULL ON with TAFT

Exhibit a: an extremely rare photo, i.e. an image capturing Australian beauty blogger of mildly well-read blog swatchgirl dot com z-grade fame with her hair out. I never wear my hair out. It’s always up in a ponytail or topknot, to the extent that I shaved out a big chunk of hair on the back of my head to make my noggin look marginally more interesting when my hair is up. I don’t do down. I don’t do out. Pins and hair ties and my neck bared to the sunlight, that’s more my style.

I never wear my hair out. Yet, thanks to Taft and their new Full On range of hair styling products, my hair is both out and in loose curls. By golly, what a moment.

My hair was combed out of its usual messy topknot and spritzed liberally with Guardian Angel (AU$6.99), a heat protection spray without any hold factor that’s designed to handle temperatures of up to 220oC, or as hot as a GHD iron. My hair was then curled with a GHD into the most bridesmaid-y tight ringlets you’ve ever seen, a look I haven’t sported since I got my hair permed at the tender age of 8 in time for my cousin’s wedding.
Mercifully the curls were separated  and tousled into loose waves, with a little Styling Powder added at the roots for more volume (I don’t have this at home, but I do have a faithful little canister of Schwarzkopf Extra Care Volume Powder – improvisation, etc) and finished with a generous spritz of Freeze It (AU$5.99), a firm hold hairspray without any crunchiness.

Nice! The day I learn how to curl both sides of my head with a GHD – am I the only person who can only do the left side? anyone? Bueller? – I’m going to recreate this look, scary bridesmaid moment and all.

  1. This post made me laugh. Probably more the Ferris Bueller reference (showing my age there!). So glad I am not the only person in the universe who can only do GHD curls on one side of their head. I just don’t get how bloggers make GHD curls look so easy…..and yet every single time I try it looks hideous.

    • I’d love to find out their curling secrets! I’ve managed to get straightening my hair down and I think that’s going to be the extent of my skills forevermore.

  2. So glad I’m not the only one who defaults to a top knot or ponytail. I’m currently in the awkward stage of my hairstyle, with my hair hovering at shoulder length and a half grown out cowlicky fringe to boot, so I’m contributing significantly to the bobby pin economy right now. That said, you do make an out style look good (and easy!)…

    • I think any style looks easy when a professional hairdresser does it! I know that if I tried to do this myself only one side of my head would be curled, the other side would be lank and then I’d swear and shove it in a bun :D

      • That sounds familiar. Sometimes I try to shake myself out of my hair rut and attempt something fancy (usually when I need to be somewhere in 5 minutes) but inevitably I use too much product/not enough pins/lack patience and my attempt at soft old Hollywood-esque curls becomes a ponytail (with swearing, naturally).
