Blonde Ambition

So if you follow me on Twitter or on Facebook, you’d know that a few months ago I made the jump to blonde hair with all the hilariously steep learning curve that entails. My knowledge of hair has increased ten-fold – despite having a decent art background and should understand how the combination of light and colour can cancel out other tones, I was still mildly taken aback when I realised that essentially I’d be an aficionado of using very weak yet nonetheless hilariously bright purple dye to make brassy blonde hair nice and cool again.

So! Here’s a quick little rundown of my basic hair cocktail:

  • Shampoo and condition with Original & Mineral Hydrate & Conquer shampoo and conditioner (available from good salons). Hydrating haircare that isn’t heavy means my fine-but-there’s-a-lot-of-it has some bounce and movement even when I can’t be bothered with blowdrying some volume. They smell divine too, like some kind of berry-chocolate parfait.
  • Fudge Clean Blonde violet toning shampoo (available from Priceline) is a startling super-purple purple shampoo that I pop on and lather up, then daydream and stare at the shower wall for five minutes before rinsing out.  As I’ve gone blonde after years of red hair, there’s still quite a coppery tinge to the midlengths and ends of my hair. A shot of violet toning shampoo every second wash – or a dash added to my O&M shampoo if I’m pressed on time – keeps the burnished brass tones at bay. I’ve also been experimenting more with how long I keep it on for as I’m in mad love with the silver tones it creates on the less coppery parts of my hair. You know me, always tweeting about whatever temporary rinse I’ve managed to give myself today!
  • Original & Mineral The Power Base protein treatment is something I’ve written about before, but I’m still using it and loving it. Whenever my hair feels a bit crispy dry on the ends, I pop it on between shampooing and conditioning. Lots of moisture but, again, none of the weight.
Voila! Blonde hair that’s had a lot of chemical processing, but it feels soft, silky and healthy. Easy peasy.

I get my mane maintained by Robert at Atlantis Hair in Paddington, an Original & Mineral salon. Give them a call on (02) 93613977!
