Benefit – It’s Potent! eye cream

Let’s talk about eye cream, baby.
Let’s talk about you and me.
Talk about all the good things and the bad things that may be.
Let’s talk aboutttttt eye cream.

Sorry Salt-n-Peppa. DJ Spinderella was always my favourite.

Benefit have thrown themselves into the world of skincare with the launch of b.right Radiant Skincare, a neat’n'tidy collection of functional skincare designed to give your skin a good drink and leave you looking extra bright and fresh. I’ve been using the SPF15 facial emulsion for a few months and declared it gym bag-worthy, but how does their little pot o’ eye cream stack up?

Benefit – It's Potent!

It’s Potent! is a creamy, plush eye cream in a stout glass jar with a screw-top lid. The official line is that it’s packed with, y’know, stuff to reign in your dark circles and keep your peepers looking fresh and bright. Any scent it has is mild enough to be completely insignificant, and even during a particularly unpleasant allergy attack where I rubbed my eyes until I looked like Foxy Brown after a three day bender, the cream didn’t sting my skin or make my eyes water.

Benefit – It

Despite being quick thick and rich in the jar, the cream warms up quickly and melts into my skin with barely any effort on my behalf. Given that I can be a touch dry around my eyes and I tend to develop mild allergic reactions on the sensitive, flexible skin under the eye, I’m a little paranoid about anything that requires a great deal of effort to work into the skin. For that It’s Potent! earns full marks – it melts easily, it has plenty of ‘slip’ and you’d have to sport ham-handed man-fists to muck up applying it.

Application is all well and good, but the true measure of an eye cream is how well it works. It’s Potent! gives a totally adequate amount of moisture to my skin. Adequate sounds a bit like a damning judgement, but adequate is just that: adequate. If you’re not after a super-saturated Save Our Skin grade of heavy moisturiser and just want something to refresh your eyes after a day staring at a computer, then It’s Potent! is bang on the money.
After a week or two I ended up using It’s Potent exclusively at night. I’m not a big fan of using eye creams during the day – and that is totally personal preference, not a Skincare Law or anything – and it was just as effective when used before bed as an overnight moisture treatment.

As for how well It’s Potent! treats fine lines, well… it’s hard to say. I’ve been using the rolled-gold Rolls Royce of peptide creams for years (pH Advantage Rhydex-2, fact hunters) which just shrugs off my smile lines and laughter creases like they were yesterdays news. It’s a bit of an unfair fight to compare the heavyweight champion of the line-fighting world with the peptide equivalent of a kid sparring in his garage.

It’s Potent! is a totally cromulent simple product that I’d happily recommend to someone in their early 20′s who is looking for their first eye cream. It’ll give your eyes a drink, stave off the worst of your air conditioning dehydration and if you’re a newbie to the world of lotions and potions, it’s in the class of skincare that I lovingly refer to as ‘having training wheels’.
For this little black duck though, I just need/want something a bit more hardcore to keep my haggard old crone eyes under control.

It’s Potent! eye cream retails for AU$58 for 14.2g and it available at all Benefit counters now. Snap to it!

  1. I love your honest review. I’m obsessed with eye creams. I’m totally going to look up the pH Advantage Rhydex-2 one now!

    • Let me know if you find it/try it – I’m hopelessly biased towards it due to how well it smooths out the little horizontal crease I have under my lower lashes, and it bulldozes over any little dehydration crows feet as well.

  2. I’ll have to give these Benefit products a try. I can’t thank you enough for turning me on to Mario Badescu. That stuff has really calmed down my dry, sensitive skin. And it’s loads cheaper than Obagi, which was really starting to irritate.

    • Oh, excellent! I’m glad Mario B is working for you – it’s so functional and basic that it gets lost amongst the more glam lines, but it has some real rockstar products buried in the line as well.
