JK Jemma Kidd: Five minutes with Korben

I recently had the absolute pleasure in catching up with Korben, international make-up artist and training manager for JK Jemma Kidd, the fun and funky streetsmart arm of the now-legendary Jemma Kidd Makeup School.
I stole five minutes of his time to ask him seven pressing questions about all things beauty.

What’s your number one, never fail, never goes wrong make-up tip?
“‘Don’t overload your brush with colour. It happens all the time! And that’s any colour – eye colour, lip colour, brow colour. It’s better to add more than it is to take away.
Another good one is to always make up your eyes first and worry about your skin later. That way if any eyeshadow fallout happens you can just clean it easily.”

Be honest: what are your favourite beauty mistakes?
“My favourite beauty mistake is too many lashes. I’m a fan of big lashes but wearing two or three sets of falsies at once just on the top lash is a bit much! How you can blink is beyond me!”

But I really want super-huge bit fat lashes!
“If you want big full lashes try our Ultra Plush Volumising Mascara in Backstage Black. It has little silk polymer fibres that hold onto the lash and cling on to each other, building big volume and length without the clumps. What’s really cool is the V-shaped channel cut into the brush – it acts as a mascara reservoir to really flood the lash with product in just one sweep. Instant gratification!”

What do you think people should make a feature of – their lips or their eyes?
“That’s a really good question! It’s all about playing to your strengths – if you’ve got amazing eyes, play them up. If you’ve got beautiful lips, make that your statement. Take your best feature and make it stand out, I say.”

For quick and simple beauty, lips should be…
“Lips should be smooth, hydrated and kissable all the time.”
(I say: try JK Jemma Kidd Sheer Vanity gloss and glaze – a sheer hydrating wash of colour gives you a your-lips-but-better pout without any stickiness or disco shine.)

A quick fix for your eyes is…
“Your eyes should be clean. If nothing else, dab a little primer on your lid and set with a powder to even out any undertones and give a nice smooth finish. A bright, clean eye is so much better than worrying too much about colour.”
(I say: if you’re in a rush, pop on JK Jemma Kidd iStyle duo eyeshadow in Capri – the soft neutral shades will help you look clean and polished without looking overdone.)

And your skin should be…
“Skin should be nude and beautiful – enhance your natural beauty and let yourself glow.”
(I say: if you’ve never tried JK Jemma Kidd’s rockstar hero Mannequin Skin, you’re missing out! It’s like eight hours of sleep and a glass of bubbly in liquid form.)

Dorks.

Are you a Melbournite? You’re in luck if you are! Korben will be at the Chapel St Kit Store on Tuesday the 10th of May from 6:30 to 8:30PM – call (03) 9827 5988 to book yourself a spot and get the full Korben experience.
