Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we? January 2009 – exhausted after a brutal Christmas on the retail front lines, your gracious host escapes to Melbourne arm-in-arm with The Chap for a long weekend of cocktails, fine dining and rumpling a few hotel sheets. At the newsagents at Sydney airport, she sees a life-changing image. A heroine. A strutting figure. A gorgeous nerd.
Oh yes. Tina Fey on the cover of Vanity Fair. My heart was instantly stolen away, plus I really, really liked her lipstick. Thankfully Vanity Fair is one of the last rags around to have an impeccably good make-up listing for each shoot (take note, beauty eds – we really, really want to know what products are used, not just whatever you have laying around that’s kinda close enough) so it was the work of a second to flip to the back and discover that her lippie was Niagra from NARS.
Done, sorted. I purchased it from Mecca Cosmetica just off Chapel St the very next morning.
Niagra lipstick by NARS is a medium opacity cream lipstick with a satiny finish. One swipe gives a veil of colour, two swipes gives a juicy flush and three swipes earns you full coverage.
The colour is a sassy but wearable coral that tints slightly more orange than pink – not enough to be an apricot tone, but definitely not a straight coral. I generally wear this sans lipliner or a dab of clear lipliner, given that it’s the sort of lipstick that picks up your natural lip colour and brightens your complexion. Even without a solid base of liner the lippie itself is super wearable, given that I can natter away for a few hours without needing a touch-up.
If you’ve never used NARS lipsticks before, Niagra is actually quite a good introduction to the line. Although a little waxy, it’s nowhere near as dry as other NARS lipsticks when applied straight from the tube. The colour, despite its intense appearance, is both very forgiving to apply and super wearable.
NARS Niagra lipstick is a sharp AU$58 from Mecca Cosmetica. Pair it with some sleek catseye liner, sheer foundation and some righteous bedhead!
