Too Faced Fantasy Island eyeshadow duo swatch & review

Ugh, sorry for the sudden radio silence. I’ve been struck down with the mutant death flu that’s rampaging the town for the past week, so I’ve been indulging in sleep and Fallout 3 rather than being a good diligent blogger. To make up for it, let me show you one of the most fun yet tragically unused items in my little stash – Too Faced’s eye-shadow duo in Fantasy Island.

Fantasy Island is a powder eyeshadow duo in a combination of an icy celery green and a turquoise-tinted green. The colour payoff on this duo, as with most of their eyeshadows, is absolutely top notch and superior to most high-end premium brands out there. The big comparison swatch below the Too Faced eyeshadow is applied in a single stroke but the MAC comparison shadows needed three or more(!).
The texture of the eyeshadow itself is quite soft to the extent that I’d advise against using any Too Faced single or duo eyeshadow as part of a travelling/touch-up makeup kit, but the trade off is that I never have to scrub and scrub with my eyeshadow brush in an effort to get any colour to show up. I’ve had a few of these duo eyeshadows crack and split after quite light daily use, but a bit of firm pressure with the pad of your finger seems to do the trick in pressing it back into place.

I described this before as fun but unused, which is absolutely true – I’ve owned this duo for two years and I’ve never worn it. Not because I don’t like it or green in general, just that I know on my complexion – pale with strong pink undertones – green is always indicative that I’m going to have to put in a lot of hard work to get it looking really lovely. Doesn’t stop me from buying a lot of green eye-shadow though!
This duo seems to work best on yellow-undertoned pale complexions and medium olive skin. On darker skin tones the silver base in the celery shadow just turns an awful metallic ash colour unless it’s taken over a green-tinted eyeshadow base, but it all comes down to how much effort you want to put into applying an eyeshadow.

Oh boy, a mega comparison picture! In order from top to bottom:

  • MAC Early Lawn
  • MAC Springtime Skipper
  • Too Faced Fantasy Island – celery
  • Too Faced Fantasy Island – turquoise-tinted green
  • MAC Parrot
  • MAC Steamy

The closest dupe there is MAC’s Steamy to the darker green Too Faced eyeshadow, but Steamy has a stronger blue undertone. The pale celery shadow has no duplicates in my collection.

There you go! This eyeshadow can be purchased for US$17 from TooFaced.com and Sephora in the US, £11.50 from Asos in the UK and for AU$34.95 from kit Cosmetics in Australia.
