Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics – Pageant

Following up the review I wrote about Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Grandma a few days ago, here is another Lip Tar in Pageant, a slightly dusky bright warm pink. Yes, it’s awfully similar to MAC’s Girl About Town lipstick, but nowhere near as thick and texturally chunky. It has the same long-lasting properties as Grandma and the same satin finish when dried, and actually feels a little nicer on the lips after a couple of hours of wear. No dry lips, no cracking, no desperate lunges for lip balm.
After my experience with applying Grandma, I halved the amount of Lip Tar used and kept it well within my lipline. You can go over the lipline with these, but like a lot of liquid lipsticks it doesn’t play very nicely with foundation and gets a funny crackly edge on it. I also went over the edge of the product with a mostly empty brush to get that nicely polished, slightly sheer edge. It allows the colour to stand out on the lips without being caged in by a hard (and dated) severe lipline. If you’re worried about bleeding or feathering, you can still use this technique if you go over your lips first with a clear lipliner pencil.

I gave Pageant a more comprehensive wear test than I did with Grandma. Three hours after applying with a lipbrush to bare, unlined lips and after a cup of tea and a can of soft drink, the colour is still cleanly applied to the majority of my lips. It’s faded a little on the inside seam of my lips, but it hasn’t balled up, split or turned to an unpleasant texture. My lips don’t feel dry or cakey.
Reapplication is a cinch – just a little fresh colour dabbed to the worn-away areas, no need to apply all over. A covered or retractable lip brush with a little product pre-loaded would be fantastic for this.

I’m pleasantly surprised by these Lip Tars. I had a preconceived notion that they were going to be thick and sticky, or (worse) dry to a powdery, chalky finish. Going by swatches I’ve seen, I’d like to try Momento, Melange and Hush, and, of course, Safety Orange! I’m also interested in OCC’s  nail polish line as well, but given that I haven’t seen much in the way of swatches or chatter yet, I think I’ll wait on those a little longer.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars can be purchased from makeupandglow.com.au, lehved.com.au and from occmakeup.com.

  1. Thanks for the Lip Tar review. I’ve heard good things, but haven’t gotten around to trying it yet. I use OCC’s Tarred nail lacquer and love it, though it may chip a bit faster than other black polishes I’ve tried. I should probably pick up their top coat.

  2. Glad you enjoyed – I’ll probably be getting more and will sample you so you can swatch.

I also need to sample pot some Harlow for you – I need to find this brand again!

  3. It is, isn’t it! I’m really pleased with this Lip Tar, and I can’t wait to try some more!

  4. That is so pretty!
